Sales Engineer recruitment

Sales Engineer recruitment for products that have to be understood before they can be sold.

Engineered products are not sold from a brochure. Somebody has to understand the customer's application, translate it into a specification the factory can build, and be believed by an engineer who has seen every sales pitch going.

Sales Engineer and Technical Sales Engineer recruitment for manufacturing and engineering businesses.

Why this appointment is difficult

A Sales Engineer sells technical or engineered products by working through the customer's application: sizing, specification, compatibility, compliance and installation, alongside price and delivery. The role suits manufacturers, industrial equipment suppliers and building-product businesses where a purely commercial salesperson would lose credibility, and a purely technical person would not close.

The recurring mistake is recruiting for one half of the role. An engineer who cannot ask for the order produces excellent technical support and no revenue. A strong salesperson who cannot hold a technical conversation is politely managed out of the room by the customer's engineering team.

The second mistake is assuming the two halves are needed in equal measure everywhere. A configured-product business may need deep application knowledge; a building-products business may need less technical depth but far stronger project and specification behaviour.

We establish the real balance by working through the products, the applications and who has to be convinced, then assess candidates against both halves — technical credibility and commercial behaviour — rather than the one the interviewer finds easier to test.

When businesses need a Sales Engineer

Technical questions stall the sale

Enquiries slow down waiting for internal engineering support, and momentum is lost to a competitor who answered on the day.

Engineers do the selling by default

Technical staff are pulled into customer meetings because nobody in sales can hold the conversation.

Products are specified, not shopped

Customers need help designing the product in, not a price list.

A new territory or product range needs technical coverage

Growth is limited by how many credible technical conversations the business can have each week.

What the role does in practice

Application-led selling

Understanding what the customer is actually trying to achieve, then proposing the right configuration for it.

Technical credibility with engineers and specifiers

Holding detail on performance, compliance, standards and installation without retreating to the brochure.

Quotation and specification work

Accurate, commercially sound proposals that reflect what the customer will actually install.

Project and pipeline follow-through

Tracking projects through long cycles rather than quoting and hoping.

Working with the factory

Translating between customer requirements and what engineering and production can realistically deliver.

Commercial discipline

Pricing, margin awareness and asking for the order — the half of the role most often under-assessed.

What the wrong appointment costs

The salary is rarely the largest number. The expensive part is the commercial time a market-entry programme loses while an appointment that was never going to work runs its course.

  • Risk 1

A capable engineer who never converts, and a year of unbilled technical support.

  • Risk 2

A confident salesperson who loses credibility with the customer's technical team in the first meeting.

  • Risk 3

Quotations that win work the factory cannot make profitably.

  • Risk 4

Specification opportunities lost because nobody followed the project through its cycle.

  • Risk 5

A revolving door in a small technical talent pool, which the market notices.

Decision support

Sales Engineer or Technical Sales Manager?

Both need technical credibility. The commercial scope is different, and so is the person.

ScopeIndividual contributor: customers, applications, projects and quotationsTerritory, accounts or a team, with commercial leadership responsibility
FocusTechnical solution selling, application support, specification detailTerritory strategy, account development, channel and sometimes people management

Businesses regularly advertise for one and interview for the other. Settling this first shortens the search considerably.

How a Sales Engineer search is run

  1. 01

    Commercial briefing

The business, the market or territory, the route to market, the customers, the products, the realistic first-two-year objectives and the internal support the person will have.

  2. 02

    Role definition

A role built around the commercial task: accountabilities, territory or team, targets, reporting line, tools and the profile that can genuinely deliver it.

  3. 03

    Search and approach

Targeted identification within the relevant sectors and market, approached directly and discreetly on the strength of the commercial opportunity.

  4. 04

    Commercial assessment

Structured assessment against the commercial plan — how the candidate would actually grow the business or territory, and whether their evidence supports it.

  5. 05

    Shortlist and interview support

A shortlist with honest commentary, plus help running interviews that test commercial capability rather than interview technique.

  6. 06

    Appointment and first-year structure

Support with offer, onboarding and the commercial plan the new appointment works to from day one.

What we need to understand before starting

  • The market being entered or developed, and how far the entry has already progressed.

  • The intended route to market: direct, distribution, agents, specification-led or a combination.

  • The products, their technical complexity and who has to be convinced to buy them.

  • What the role must achieve commercially in its first year and its first three years.

  • The internal support available: marketing, technical, logistics, pricing authority and leadership time.

  • The realistic package, including how it compares with the local market for that role.

  • Language requirements, travel expectations and where the person will be based.

  • Whether a permanent appointment is genuinely the right first commitment.

Common questions

  • Often, but not always. In some sectors a formal qualification is expected by customers; in others, proven application knowledge earned on site carries more weight. We set the requirement against who has to be convinced, rather than defaulting to a degree filter that excludes strong candidates.

  • Yes. A Sales Engineer is a technically strong individual contributor working with customers and projects. A Technical Sales Manager carries broader territory, account or leadership responsibility. We would rather define which one your business needs than fill the title you happened to advertise.

  • We can, though we would normally sequence them. The first appointment teaches a great deal about the profile that genuinely works in your applications and sectors.

  • Where those roles are part of the commercial capability being built — applications engineering, internal technical sales, estimating support — yes, as part of a wider brief. We do not run general engineering recruitment.

  • No. Technical sales appointments are made in the UK, across Europe and in North America, in both directions. The technical assessment approach is the same; the market knowledge behind it is what changes.
