Why More Website Traffic Doesn't Always Mean More Sales

Traffic without conversion is wasted acquisition cost. Buying more of it makes the waste bigger, not smaller.

Performance figures printed on paper

Traffic is the easiest number to increase and the least connected to revenue. Between a visit and an invoice sit five conversions, and each one leaks.

The chain that decides the outcome

  • Visit to enquiry — messaging, proof and calls to action.
  • Enquiry to qualified opportunity — targeting and qualification.
  • Opportunity to quote — responsiveness and sales capacity.
  • Quote to order — follow-up, commercial terms and closing.
  • Order to revenue — delivery, repeat purchase and account development.

Multiply five modest percentages together and the reason 10,000 visits produced eleven orders becomes obvious. Doubling the visits doubles eleven. Fixing two links in the chain can do considerably more for less money.

Wrong traffic behaves like a cost, not an asset

Visitors from outside your area, outside your sector or outside your price range will never convert regardless of how good the site is. Volume without relevance inflates every metric except the one that matters.

Take last quarter's numbers: visits, enquiries, qualified enquiries, quotes, orders. Express each step as a percentage. The worst percentage is where the next pound belongs — and in most SMEs it is somewhere between enquiry and quote, not at the top.

There is little value in reducing the cost of an enquiry if those enquiries don't become customers.

Then, and only then, buy more traffic

Once the chain converts properly, additional traffic compounds. Bought first, it simply exposes the leaks at a higher monthly cost.

Not generating enough opportunities?

PPC, demand generation and website conversion work judged on cost per qualified lead — not clicks.
