How Much Does a Sales Consultant Cost in the UK?

Pricing for sales consultancy varies widely, but for most SMEs, it falls into three structures: fixed-fee projects, monthly retainers, or performance-linked models. Understanding what drives these costs is the key to ensuring a return on investment.

There is no single market rate for a sales consultant in the UK. You will see day rates, fixed-fee projects, monthly retainers and performance-linked fees, and prices vary widely. Costs are driven by the consultant's seniority, the depth of the diagnostic required, and whether they are providing strategy only or hands-on implementation.

For most small and medium businesses, the goal is not to find the cheapest day rate, but the engagement model that delivers the fastest route to increased revenue without adding permanent overhead.

What drives the cost of sales consultancy?

Consultancy fees are not arbitrary. They are generally built on three factors: the seniority of the consultant, the scope of the problem, and the level of risk sharing involved.

  • Seniority: A former Sales Director with 20 years of sector-specific experience will command a higher rate than a generalist coach.
  • Scope: A broad 'growth audit' takes more time and data analysis than a specific fix for a lead generation problem.
  • Engagement Model: Fixed-fee projects offer price certainty, while retainers provide ongoing accountability and management.

Common pricing structures in the UK

Day rates are still common and vary widely with seniority and sector, but many modern firms use value-based or fixed-fee models to align with the client's goals.

Is a sales consultant worth it?

A consultant is worth the investment if they are fixing a structural problem rather than just providing extra hands. If your sales team is busy but revenue is flat, or if you are losing deals on price, the cost of the consultant is usually lower than the cost of the lost margin.

However, a consultant is NOT worth it if you have a cash crisis (consultancy takes time to show results), if you have no product-market fit, or if the problem is actually in operations and delivery. In those cases, the sales consultant will just help you sell more of a problem you cannot fulfill.
