Who Can Help Implement My Sales Strategy? Implementation vs Advice

The gap between a strategy document and revenue is implementation. This guide explains who can actually do the work of executing a sales plan.

Turning a sales plan into action

Most B2B companies do not fail because they have a bad strategy; they fail because they cannot execute it. A strategy is just a list of decisions, but implementation is the hundreds of daily activities required to make those decisions real.

If you find that your sales strategy is still a document that nobody refers to after three months, you have an implementation problem, not a strategy problem. The question then becomes: who should do the work?

The direct answer: who can help?

To implement a sales strategy, you need someone who can translate high-level goals into weekly activity, manage the systems, and lead the people. Your options range from a full-time Sales Director (highest cost, highest ownership) to a Sales Consultant (lower cost, advice-led). For hands-on execution without the overhead of a full-time hire, a Fractional Sales Director or a Growth Partner provides the best balance of senior experience and practical implementation.

Should I outsource commercial growth?

Outsourcing implementation is often more efficient than hiring, especially for SMEs. Implementation requires a level of commercial maturity that many businesses haven't built yet. Outsourcing allows you to 'rent' that maturity until the business is large enough to justify a permanent team.

  • Speed: An external partner can often start executing in days, whereas a permanent hire takes months.
  • Reduced Risk: You avoid the long-term commitment and high cost of a senior failure.
  • Specialist Skills: You get access to the specific skills needed for that stage of growth (e.g., market entry or system build) that a generalist salesperson might lack.

Comparing implementation options

Choosing the right route depends on your budget, the complexity of the sales cycle, and how much management time you have.

The risks of 'hiring your way out' of the problem

The most common mistake is hiring a salesperson and expecting them to implement the strategy. Salespeople are designed to operate within a system, not to build one. If your process is broken or your strategy is unclear, a new hire will likely fail — not because they are bad at sales, but because they were asked to do a job they weren't hired for.

Before hiring, consider whether you need someone to 'do the selling' or someone to 'build the machine'. If it is the latter, a Fractional Director or Growth Partner is usually the safer first step.

Not sure what kind of sales help you need?

Start with the problem rather than the service: sales help for founders, owners and Managing Directors, organised by what is actually going wrong.
