Is a Fractional Sales Director Cheaper Than Hiring Full-Time?
Comparing a fractional day rate to a full-time salary is a common mistake. The true cost of leadership includes recruitment, on-costs, and the risk of a wrong hire.

When a business owner looks at a fractional Sales Director's day rate, the first reaction is often to compare it to the daily breakdown of a permanent salary. This is a false comparison.
To understand which is better value, you have to look at the total cost of employment and the specific leadership capacity your business actually needs today.
The cost comparison framework
A fractional Sales Director is almost always a lower total investment than a full-time hire for SMEs. While the day rate is higher, you avoid the heavy burden of a six-figure salary, National Insurance, bonuses, recruitment fees, and car allowances. The cost-effectiveness depends on your required leadership capacity; once the role demands five days a week, a permanent hire usually offers better long-term value.
Working out the true cost of a permanent hire
To build an honest comparison, use your own figures for the following drivers. Do not just look at the 'headline' salary.
| Cost Driver | Permanent Hire (Full-Time) | Fractional (Part-Time) |
|---|---|---|
| Basic Salary | Your expected salary (insert your own figure) | Fee (from £2,950 + VAT at Evans) |
| Employer NI & Pension | Employer National Insurance and pension contributions | Included in fee |
| Recruitment Fee | Agency or search fee, if you use one | Zero |
| Benefits & Car | Car allowance, private health, etc. | Zero |
| Bonus / Commission | Whatever bonus or commission plan you set | Variable / None |
| Notice Period Risk | Whatever notice period the contract sets | As set out in the engagement terms |
Other cost factors to consider
1. The 'Ramp-up' Cost
A permanent hire typically takes 3 to 6 months to become fully effective. During this time, you are paying 100% of the cost for perhaps 50% of the output. A fractional director is usually an experienced 'interim' specialist who expects to deliver value from week two.
2. The Risk of the Wrong Hire
Hiring the wrong Sales Director is one of the most expensive mistakes an SME can make. Between recruitment fees, salary paid, and the opportunity cost of lost sales, the bill can easily exceed £50,000. The fractional model allows you to 'try' the leadership level with a much lower exit cost if the fit isn't right.
When is a full-time hire better value?
Fractional leadership is not always the cheapest or best option. A permanent, full-time Sales Director becomes the better value choice when:
- The workload genuinely requires 5 days a week of senior strategic and tactical leadership.
- You have a very large sales team (e.g. 15+ people) that needs constant on-site management.
- The business has reached a scale where the 'cost per day' of a permanent hire (including all on-costs) is significantly lower than the fractional rate, and the volume of work justifies the lack of flexibility.
- You have high confidence in your ability to recruit and retain the right person for the long term.
