I Need Help With Sales. Who Should I Speak To?
There are at least five different people who will happily take this call. Only one of them is right for the problem you probably have — and sometimes the right answer is none of them.

In short
It depends on what is actually broken, not on who you happen to know. A sales consultant diagnoses and fixes the sales process itself — pipeline, conversion, proposition, activity. A fractional sales leader takes ongoing responsibility for hitting a number. A recruiter finds you a person once you already know what that person needs to do. A marketing agency generates attention and leads. A business coach works on you, not the sales system. If you cannot yet describe your sales problem in one sentence, none of them are the right first call — a short, structured diagnosis is.
"I need help with sales" is a real problem but it is not a specific enough brief for anyone to act on — which is exactly why so many owners end up talking to the wrong person first. A recruiter will happily discuss a hire. An agency will happily discuss a campaign. A coach will happily discuss mindset. All of them can be genuinely good at what they do, and none of that guarantees they are solving your actual problem.
This is a straightforward guide to who does what, the honest limits of each option, and how to work out which one — if any — you actually need right now.
Why the question is harder than it sounds
Every one of the roles below can point to businesses they have genuinely helped. That is part of the problem, not a reason to trust whichever one you speak to first: a recruiter will tell you, honestly, that the right hire changes everything, because in the cases where the diagnosis was already correct, it does. A marketing agency will tell you that more qualified leads change everything, and in businesses where lead volume really was the constraint, it does. The trouble is that each of them is diagnosing from their own toolkit, not from your actual numbers.
A sales consultant
A sales consultant looks at the whole commercial process — how enquiries are generated, qualified, quoted, followed up and closed — and works out where it is genuinely losing money, then either fixes it directly or builds the plan for someone in the business to fix it. This is the right first call when you know sales are underperforming but you are not confident which part of the process is actually responsible.
It is the wrong call if you already have a precise, well-evidenced diagnosis and simply need capacity to execute against it — in that case you may be better served by a hire or a fractional leader who can just get on with the known plan.
A fractional sales leader
A fractional sales leader takes ongoing accountability for the sales function — usually for a set number of days a week — running the pipeline, managing a team if one exists, and reporting against a target, without the cost of a full-time senior hire. This suits a business that already understands its market and proposition reasonably well but has never had proper sales leadership, and needs sustained, hands-on direction rather than a one-off diagnosis.
It is a poor fit for a business that has not yet worked out what is actually wrong, because a fractional leader will need that diagnosis to know what to lead towards — and doing that diagnosis as part of an ongoing leadership retainer is a slower, more expensive way to get the same answer.
A recruiter
A recruiter finds and assesses people against a role you have already defined. That is genuinely valuable, but only once you know what the role needs to achieve, what kind of person can achieve it, and how it fits the rest of the commercial team. A recruiter cannot tell you whether the actual problem is a person problem at all — many owners hire a salesperson to fix a broken sales process, and the process defeats the person within six to twelve months.
The tell that you are not ready for a recruiter yet: you cannot describe, in a sentence, what this hire needs to be doing differently from what is happening now.
A marketing agency
A marketing agency generates attention, enquiries and leads — through advertising, content, SEO or campaigns. This is the right call when your diagnosis genuinely points to volume: you convert what comes in reasonably well, but not enough is coming in. It is the wrong call, and a common source of wasted spend, when the real issue is conversion — enquiries arrive and are then lost to slow follow-up, weak qualification or an unconvincing proposal. More leads into a leaky process just produces more leaks, faster and more expensively.
A business coach
A business coach works on you — decision-making, confidence, time management, leadership habits — rather than on the mechanics of the sales process itself. This can be genuinely useful where the constraint really is personal: an owner who avoids difficult sales conversations, struggles to delegate, or is stuck in old habits that no longer serve a bigger business.
It will not, by itself, fix a pipeline with no qualification stage, a proposition that has drifted out of step with the market, or a follow-up process that does not exist. Coaching changes how you operate; it does not build the system around you.
When the honest answer is none of them yet
If you cannot yet say, specifically, what is going wrong — only that revenue has flattened and it is worrying you — the most useful next step is not a phone call to any of the five above. It is a short, disciplined look at your own numbers: enquiries, quotes, orders, and where between those stages opportunities are actually disappearing. That costs nothing but a few days, and it turns "I need help with sales" into something specific enough that any of the options above can actually act on it.
Where a structured diagnosis fits in
If you have looked at your own numbers and still cannot get a clear read — or you can see there is a problem but not what a realistic, resourced fix looks like — a fixed-scope engagement like the Commercial Growth Sprint is built for exactly that gap. It is a bounded, fixed-fee piece of work that identifies where growth is genuinely being lost and sets out what to do about it, rather than an open-ended retainer or a sales pitch dressed up as advice.
If you are not yet sure which of these problems you actually have, the Sales Help for Founders & Business Owners hub is a better starting point than any single phone call, because it is organised around the symptom you are seeing rather than around a service someone wants to sell you.
Know sales needs fixing, but not sure what the constraint actually is?
The Commercial Growth Sprint is a fixed-fee £1,495 + VAT engagement that identifies where growth is genuinely being lost and what to do about it first.
