How do I find distributors in the USA?

The US market is not one market. Finding a distributor there means picking a region and a channel before you pick a company.

In short

Finding US distributors effectively means starting with a defined region or vertical rather than the whole country, using industry-specific trade associations and trade shows as the primary discovery route, verifying genuine reach through named customer references rather than stated territory, and expecting to manage several regional partners rather than one national distributor covering the whole market.

Many manufacturers approach the US as though it were a single market comparable in scale to one European country, and appoint one distributor expecting national coverage. The US is geographically and commercially closer to a continent than a country, with distinct regional buying patterns, logistics networks and sometimes even regulatory variation by state. A single distributor rarely has genuine reach across the whole country, however confident they sound on the first call.

Finding the right US distributor starts with deciding what scope is realistic: a strong regional player with deep relationships in one part of the country is often a better first step than a nationwide generalist who will treat your product as one line among hundreds.

Why the US needs a regional strategy

Freight costs, state-level regulation, and simply the scale of the country mean that a distributor based on the East Coast rarely has meaningful presence or relationships on the West Coast, regardless of what their website claims. Deciding in advance which region, or which two or three regions, represent the best initial opportunity, based on where your sector's demand is concentrated, makes the search far more targeted than trying to find one distributor for the entire country.

Industry associations and trade shows as the primary route

US sector-specific trade associations are generally more active and better attended than their European equivalents, and their member directories are a genuine way to identify established distributors with real standing in a given industry. Major US trade shows remain one of the most efficient ways to meet several credible distributors in a single trip, since most serious regional players in a given sector will have a presence at the largest annual event.

Verifying reach beyond the sales pitch

US distributors are often skilled, confident sales organisations in their own right, and a strong first conversation is not evidence of actual market reach. Ask for named existing customers in the specific sub-region or vertical you care about, and speak to them directly where possible, rather than relying on the distributor's own description of their coverage and capability.

Understanding the role of manufacturer's reps

In several US industries, particularly industrial and building products, independent manufacturer's representatives, who sell on commission without taking stock ownership, are a common and sometimes more appropriate first route to market than a full distributor. They typically carry several complementary, non-competing lines and already have established relationships with the relevant buyers, offering a lower-commitment way to test a region before appointing a full distributor.

Logistics and import considerations

Freight time and cost from outside North America affect which distributors are realistic partners, since a distributor expecting to hold minimal stock and reorder frequently needs a supply chain that can support that cadence. Discuss realistic lead times honestly during the search process, since a mismatch here, discovered only after signing, is one of the most common causes of early relationship breakdown with US partners.

Setting realistic expectations on timeline

US sales cycles and relationship-building norms vary by sector but are rarely faster than equivalent process in Europe, and the scale of the market means building out genuine national coverage, even through two or three strong regional partners, is typically a multi-year undertaking rather than a single appointment made in one trip.
