Global Clients — UK → North America

UK Companies Expanding into the United States and Canada

North America is the market where UK companies most often over-commit: the size of the opportunity encourages a national plan, and a national plan spreads a small team so thinly that no region ever develops a genuine pipeline.

In short

UK companies succeed in North America by narrowing hard — one region, one sector, one route to market — and resourcing that properly. Evans Sales Consultancy helps UK businesses choose that focus, decide between manufacturers' representatives, distribution and direct sales, and run the commercial work until the first accounts are established.

Who this is for: UK businesses with proven domestic or European sales considering their first structured entry into the US or Canada.

Narrow before you spend

The US is a collection of regional markets with different buying structures, standards enforcement and competitive intensity. A UK company with one or two people covering it will lose to a local competitor covering one state properly.

The practical approach is to choose a region where your sector concentrates, prove the proposition there, and use that evidence to fund the next region.

Rep networks, distribution and direct sales

Reps carry existing relationships but also existing lines; the question is always where your product sits in their priorities and what keeps it there.

  • Manufacturers' representatives — commission-based, sector-specialist, common in industrial and construction products.
  • Distribution — where local stock and immediate availability decide the order.
  • Direct — where order values are high and the specification conversation is technical.

Standards, liability and the cost of getting it wrong

UL, CSA and state-level requirements are not optional detail — they decide whether the product can be specified at all. Product liability exposure in the US is materially different from the UK and needs to be priced, insured and understood before the first shipment rather than after.

Canada is a separate decision

Canada is often treated as a lighter version of the US entry. It is a different market: CSA standards, long distances between commercial centres, bilingual requirements in Quebec, and a buyer base that values supply reliability over aggressive pricing.

When a local hire pays for itself

A US-based commercial hire becomes justified when there is enough live pipeline to keep them busy and enough margin to fund them for at least a year. Before that point, a focused UK-led effort with regular travel usually generates more per pound spent. International Recruitment exists for the point where the evidence supports the hire.

What we do — and what we don’t claim

  • Evans Sales Consultancy is UK based and does not claim an office, team or local partner network in the United States or Canada.
  • We do not provide legal, tax, insurance or regulatory advice on US or Canadian requirements.

Common questions

  • It depends where your sector concentrates and what certification you already hold. Canada is often the smaller, more manageable first step; the US offers more volume but punishes an unfocused entry.

  • Not initially in most cases. Many UK companies start through manufacturers' representatives or a distributor. An entity becomes relevant when you employ people locally, hold stock or need to contract directly at scale.

  • The honest answer depends on certification, travel, stock and whether you hire. What we can do is set out the realistic sequence and the point at which each cost becomes necessary, rather than a single figure that fits nobody.

  • Often yes, in the right sector — they bring relationships you cannot buy quickly. They also carry other lines, so a rep network needs active management to stay productive.
