Specification Manager recruitment
Specification Manager recruitment for manufacturers who need to be written in, not quoted late.
In construction, the commercial battle is usually lost long before tender. A Specification Manager influences the drawing, the schedule and the specification while the decision is still open.
Why this appointment is difficult
A Specification Manager builds influence with architects, engineers, consultants and other specifiers so that a manufacturer's product is named or its performance criteria are written into a project early. It is a long-cycle, technically credible, relationship-led role, and it is fundamentally different from selling to contractors on price.
Manufacturers entering a construction market frequently discover their products are only seen at tender, where the conversation is entirely about price and lead time. By then the specification has been written around a competitor.
Specification work reverses that. It is slow, patient and measured in projects influenced rather than orders this month, which makes it hard to hire for and easy to abandon prematurely.
In a new country it is harder again: the specification chain, the standards, the certification expectations and the influence of contractors versus consultants all differ, sometimes dramatically, between the UK, Germany, France, the Nordics and North America.
When businesses need a Specification Manager
Products are being priced out at tender
Quotes go out, prices are compared, and nobody is asking for your product by name.
A market requires technical credibility
Performance, testing, certification and detailing decide the sale before commercial terms are discussed.
Entering a construction market abroad
A new country's specification chain must be understood and worked in its own language and its own standards.
Distribution alone is not creating demand
Partners can supply but cannot influence what is designed in.
What the role does in a market-entry context
Specifier relationships
Architects, structural and services engineers, facade consultants, main contractors' design teams and other influencers.
Technical credibility
Details, performance data, testing, standards and certification presented in a way a designer can use.
Project tracking
Following projects from early design through tender to award, and protecting the specification along the way.
CPD and technical education
Presentations, seminars and technical content that establish authority with a specifying audience.
Protecting the written specification
Managing substitution attempts at tender and ensuring contractors understand what was specified and why.
Feedback to product and marketing
Telling the business what specifiers actually need: details, formats, data, approvals and evidence.
What the wrong appointment costs
The salary is rarely the largest number. The expensive part is the commercial time a market-entry programme loses while an appointment that was never going to work runs its course.
Risk 1
Continued exposure to price-driven tenders with no early influence.
Risk 2
Wasted technical marketing investment nobody is using in front of specifiers.
Risk 3
A market entry that stalls because credibility with designers was never established.
Risk 4
Years of project cycle lost โ specification work compounds slowly and cannot be caught up quickly.

Commercial briefing
The market, the route to market, the customers, the products, the realistic first-two-year objectives and the internal support the person will have.
02
Role definition
A role built around the commercial task: accountabilities, territory, targets, reporting line, tools and the profile that can genuinely deliver it.
03
Search and approach
Targeted identification within the relevant sectors and territory, approached directly and discreetly on the strength of the commercial opportunity.
04
Commercial assessment
Structured assessment against the market plan โ how the candidate would actually open the territory, and whether their evidence supports it.
05
Shortlist and interview support
A shortlist with honest commentary, plus help running interviews that test commercial capability rather than interview technique.
06
Appointment and first-year structure
Support with offer, onboarding and the commercial plan the new appointment works to from day one.
What we need to understand before starting
The market being entered or developed, and how far the entry has already progressed.
The intended route to market: direct, distribution, agents, specification-led or a combination.
The products, their technical complexity and who has to be convinced to buy them.
What the role must achieve commercially in its first year and its first three years.
The internal support available: marketing, technical, logistics, pricing authority and leadership time.
The realistic package, including how it compares with the local market for that role.
Language requirements, travel expectations and where the person will be based.
Whether a permanent appointment is genuinely the right first commitment.
Common questions
Not by monthly orders. Sensible measures are projects influenced, specifications secured, specifier relationships developed and the value of tracked projects reaching tender with your product named. Businesses that measure the role like a territory sales job usually lose the person within two years.
Not necessarily, but specification influence rarely travels. A German specifier relationship does not help in France. Where specification is the route to market, it usually needs local presence, in-language, with local standards knowledge.
Sometimes, in a small market. The risk is that short-term order pressure always wins, and specification work quietly stops. Where specification is genuinely the route to market it usually needs protecting as a distinct role.
